POLICE in Bulawayo on Monday arrested 79 women from the Women of Zimbabwe Arise who were demonstrating against the water shortages that have gripped the city over the last few months.
The women most of whom were holding placards denouncing the council were rounded off at the city council offices and detained at the Bulawayo Central Police.
Although police could not be readily comment on the event which was witnessed by ZimEye, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights said it has already dispatched a team of lawyers to help the women.
“Police in Bulawayo have detained 79 Women of Zimbabwe Arise members, who were rounded up while staging a demonstration against water shortages at the Bulawayo City Council offices. ZLHR lawyers have been deployed to attend at Bulawayo Central Police Station where they are detained,” the association said.
Bulawayo is facing serious water shortages that have seen suburbs going for more 96 hours per week without water.
In some areas, residents have resorted to fetch water from unprotected sources such as streams and wells.
The city has decommissioned some of the supply dams due to dwindling water levels. Efforts to boost water supply to the city have been dragging as funding has been erratic to connect the city to Mtshabezi Dam which is seen as a temporary measure to alleviate the shortages.

  1. Wena mfana waGreyhure i was jus distinguishing btwn human and animal rights.Rules and morality dont create rights.Shona morals to provide Tebeles with water doesnt create water rights 4 Tebeles. We wil continue treating these animals(tebeles)jus like aliens at Tongogara refugee camp in Chipinge.

  2. WOZA is progressive Concerned Citizens

  8. David Coltart,Simba Makoni and Welshmen Ncube these are people centred leaders, these men are totally different from the likes of Chematamas and Mugays who are only power hungry and lacks passion for development. We need these guys at the helm if we are to see real change in our land, free from police harasment, free to excercise our constutional rights, laws that are not selective. These individuals have proved beyond any reasonable doubt that they are hungry for development not power.Lets Vote these looters out pliz, then we can deal with Tsvangirai later and elect humble people like Coltart,l thank you.

  9. Women organisations are easy to harass, while men’s orgs like war veterans can demonstrate at leasure. The same arresting officers can seek bribes in daylight with noone lifting a finger. Women are demonstrating for the welfare of everyone. Which is a crime demonstration for welfare and clear corruption? As women we reserve our vote for people who listen to us.

  10. Demonstrating about water shortages? What an old fashioned and outdated stupid and foolish behaviour by WOZA and the entire Bulawayo community? Here in Harare, the moment your tap goes dry, you simply pick up your wallet, go to any supermarket and buy yourself mineral water enough for the day. Thats why they sell mineral water. Don’t be silly maNdex, just go to TM or OK and buy mineral water for your loundry, gardening, bath and cooking, life is good Jumpmugido, Nakedmugido, Gaygodzva and Xolandog.
