MDC MP acquitted of rape thumbnail

Kwekwe Central MP Blessing Chebundo, who was facing charges of raping a 13-year-old girl, has been acquitted, Tuesday.

Magistrate William Bhila acquitted the legislator on a technicality citing what he called ‘contradictory evidence’ given by the child in court, who said she was raped while facing the ground but before the trial started had said in her court papers that she was raped while facing upwards. The young girl fell pregnant as a result of the alleged ‘rape’.

According to ZimOnline, Chebundo said after the ruling that he was elated that the judicial process is still being professional despite the challenges being faced in the country. He is quoted saying this was the most trying time in his life.

The MDC official was arrested in May in Kwekwe after allegedly raping the girl after he had given her a lift in his vehicle in January. (ZimEye, Zimbabwe)
