Bulawayo (ZimEye) – The High Court has denied human rights activist, Jestina Mukoko, freedom after dismissing an application for the release of Zimbabwe Peace Project director.
Human rights lawyers led by Beatrice Mtweta had applied to the High Court seeking Mukoko’s release from detention.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (Criminal Division) in the Attorney-General’s Office, Florence Ziyambi said the court had found the application for Mukoko’s release to be “incompetent”.
“The court dismissed the issue of Mukoko seeking release as incompetent because the same court had already ruled that she should be remanded.
“Proceedings continue at Rotten Row Court and she was ordered to appear in the magistrates’ court on her next remand date on Monday,” Ziyambi said.
The court further barred the disclosure of central intelligence officers (CIOs) who abducted Mukoko from her Norton home in December.
Last month the High ruled that Mukoko and 31 MDC activist be released from prison but they were denied freedom. Mukoko and the MDC members have so far revealed torture in the hands of police.
Mukoko and the MDC members are being accused of recruiting bandits to overthrow president Mugabe’s government. The activists have refuted the allegations.
