Bulawayo (ZimEye) – The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has failed to give certificates to former students, sparking outrage.

The students said university authorities told them that their certificates had been misplaced.

“I have been going to the university in a bid to apply pressure on the authorities so that they give me my certificate, but that has not paid off. I can’t get a permanent job as a result because most companies require a certificate,” said one student who preferred anonymity.

Another student said he had lost hope of ever getting his certificate as he was referred from one office to another on several occasions.

A lecturer in the Engineering department, who chose anonymity, said the number of students who had not received their certificates could be high, as he knew of several similar cases at the university.

“Some of our colleagues have landed themselves permanent jobs and others have gone on to apply for further studies abroad. If only the university could attend to our concerns earlier, the better,” he said.

Nust’s spokesman Felix Moyo, said the delay in granting the certificates was due to high quality control systems that saw some of the certificates being sent back for reprinting by their respective printers.

“We use indelible ink for our certificates to guard against any possible alterations on them. Other certificates had to be sent back to our printers because we felt that the ink would peel off. We don’t want to compromise our standards,” he said.

Moyo said the delay was also due to the economic challenges that had hit the institution hard last year, the time when they were printing the certificates.

He urged the affected students to bear with the university, saying they were addressing the matter.
