Bulawayo (ZimEye) – About 10 Bulawayo families were left stranded after they were hit by floods, which destroyed property worth thousands of United States dollars.
The floods swept through Bulawayo’s Nkulumane and Nketa suburbs following incessant rains that pounded the city Thursday afternoon.
However, no injuries and deaths were recorded.
The flash floods also swept crops and barricaded residents who could not cross submerged bridges in between the suburbs.
Houses situated near streams were the most affected as the small rivers swelled and bursts into homes of unsuspecting residents.
At the peak of the floods, desperate residents had to seek refugee on rooftops, as the floods threatened to sweep them away.
One of the affected residents who requested anonymity said he was stranded with his family and had nowhere to sleep since the house was almost submerged.
He said property including television sets, beds, fridges and sofas was soaked in water, leaving it “useless.”
The floods victims also revealed that a leading non-governmental organisation had pledged to assist them with blankets and food.
At the beginning of the rainy season, the Meteorological Services Department warned that due to the incessant rains, some areas were likely to be hit by flash floods.
Last month, a hailstorm that rocked the city left a trail of destruction as heavy rains accompanied by strong winds swept through suburbs.
Some of the residents have not yet completed reconstructing their properties.
During the 2001/2002 rainy season, Zimbabwe was hit by flash floods as a result of Cyclone Eline, which left a trail of destruction on houses and bridges.
