Harare (ZimEye) – Zimbabwean civil servants have issued a 14 day ultimatum to the inclusive government to address the salary issue before they go on strike.

The Apex Council – a union consisting of the Zimbabwe Teachers Association (Zimta), Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) and Public Service Association (PSA) – lambasted the government for giving a highest salary of US$236 per month.

The civil servants in Zimbabwe comprising educators and the rest of the civil servants presented a statement to register their displeasure and utter dismay at the paltry offer that the government of Zimbabwe has put forward at the negotiating table for 2010 salary review.

“The offer is inadequate, ridiculous and out of sync with the cost of living and therefore unacceptable,” read the statement jointly signed by Zimta president Tendai Chikowore, PSA president Cecilia Alexander, and the president of PTUZ, Takavafira Zhou.

The civil servants warned that the salary negotiations deadlock was a recipe for industrial disharmony likely to frustrate economic recovery.

“The civil servants demanded an urgent redress of the situation before ‘it is too late’,” said the government workers.

Government should be warned that civil servants may deliver half baked services that may ultimately compromise the Government processes, read the statement.

The civil servants warned that if the situation was not resolved within two weeks, it would escalate into conflict.
