Bulawayo (ZimEye) – Zimbabwe and some countries in Southern and Central Africa experienced a partial eclipse of the sun Friday morning.

An astronomist based in Bulawayo said the partial eclipse was visible in most parts of the country just after sunrise.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon will be between the sun and the earth, resulting in the moon obscuring the sun’s rays towards the earth, causing darkness.

Johannesburg-based Planetarium, an organisation that studies the planet solar eclipse, the partial eclipse was 32 percent in Harare, 23 percent in Bulawayo, 29 percent in Mutare and 19 percent in Beitbridge.

The percentages in Zimbabwe were however higher than what was experienced in most of Southern Africa. Zimbabwe once experienced a full solar eclipse in 2001 when most parts of the country were covered in darkness.

The total solar eclipse resulting in hordes of tourists flocking into the country to catch a glimpse of the phenomenon.

However this time around there was no hype or activities lined up, including in the country’s prime tourist destination Victoria Falls, where there was a 27 percent eclipse.
