We attended Gala to see musicians not celebrate Mugabe- Fans‏ thumbnail

Bulawayo (ZimEye)-PEOPLE who attended on Friday gathered in Bulawayo to celebrate President Robert Mugabe’s birthday said they only attended the event because of its low price and huge number of artistes including Jamaican reggae guru Sizzla Kaljoni (pictured).

Tickets for the music showcase held at the ZITF were going for a mere US$2 advance and US$3 at the gate.

One fan who attended the show said: “Where can you watch an international artiste like Sizzla for a mere US$3? This is a one time opportunity that will probably never happen.

“That is why I came here, I am not here to celebrate Mugabe’s birthday but to take advantage of the presence of these musicians,” said the fan, who refused to be named.

A crowd estimated to be between 5000 and 7000 attended the show where more than 30 musicians and dance groups took to the stage including the likes of urban groover, Rocqui, Sebede, Bob Nyabinde, Cephas Machakada, Sandra Ndebele, Chase Skuza, IYASA, Charles Charamba, Soul Brothers and Sizzla among others.

A man who identified himself as Steven Moyo said getting to watch all those musicians at one show was worth going there.

“I would never celebrate that man’s (Mugabe) birthday after all what he has done to us Zimbabweans,” he said.

Most people seem to have gone there to watch Sizzla as he is the artiste who received the biggest response from the audience and most people started streaming out immediately after he had performed at about 3 am.

Mugabe’s birthday celebrations are estimated to have cost about $500,000 and come in the backdrop of the country facing starvation owing to crop failure due to drought.

Many have criticised the lavish celebrations as a waste of money and should be dedicated to better causes such as feeding the hungry or helping to revive the ailing economy. (ZimEye, Zimbabwe)

    Just because zimbabwe is going thru some hard times does not mean wheels shld come off and everything shld stop functioning.how many of you here in diaspora live in luxury or can afford all the three basic meals while people (yr relatives) are starving in zimbabwe. mugabe ndiye adiyi, ndiye akaiya masunction. at least he fed some peoplewho attended his party. if he was selfish he wld not have invented the ordinary zimbabwean. hamunyare you guys are mugabephobia.

    He chooses to celelbrate his life in a city where he killed 30 000….and Lupepe calls him father…..I have 30 Soul bROTHERS ALBUMS AND WILL NOT PLAY THEM IF THIS GROUP THINKS THE MONEY WE SUPPORTED them with all these years in buying their albums and attending their shows was nothing compared to what Mugabe gave them.Moses and David for the first time in my life I have found something to be angry about you….liyangisile your money in Zimbabwe came from the very people Mugabe killed….ama NDEBELE…..

    What a shame,mugabe does not have any conscious left in him.How can one man,not even a true zimbabwean ,as he claims do this to the starving people he claims he represents.The man is insane his followers just can’t see that.He has held his own people hostages in their own country and the world gives a blind eye,WHAT A SHAME !!!

    sorry jojo and dhongi dhongi since you always want to be the spokespeople of bob. i did say i will not celebrate anything where mugabe is involved, i erred greatly. i am going to lead celebrations when the wicked mugabe dies in line with what God said happens when a wicked man dies. people celebrate and i will be part of those unless ofcourse if make an attempt on my life before that
