Prison officers victimised for supporting Mnangagwa thumbnail

Harare(ZimEye)-ZANU (PF) factionalism has spread to the Zimbabwe Prison Services with   more than seventy senior prison officers at Chikurubi Maximum prison having been transferred with immediate effect for allegedly calling ‘President’ the Defence Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa’s alleged chief coupe plotter, army captain Albert Matapo who is in detention.

ZPS chief Paradzai Zimondi belongs to Mujuru faction which does not see eye to eye with the Mnangagwa camp.

Matapo was last week cleared of the coupe plot charges by a the high court and is serving a five year jail term for attempting to escape from prison. The affected officers said they had been victimized for calling Matapo ‘the next Zimbabwean President’.

“The directive  was brought to our attention early this week  when the names of those who are being transferred to remote prisons throughout the country were being announced. Senior officers from the prisons headquarters said the reason why we were transferred is that we were calling Matapo the new President of Zimbabwe. In fact it’s him (Matapo) who calls himself the next Zimbabwean ‘President’ not officers.

“We are definitely going to appeal against the transfers because they are politically motivated. In fact we are going to appeal to the ministry of justice and proceed to the inclusive government if we are not given the attention we need,” said some of affected senior officers.

Most of them have been posted to Hwange, Gokwe, Gwanda, Tsholotsho and Chipinge, Binga and Mount Darwin.

“At  the parade  we  were also told that  there were  some  of  us who had a habit of  leaking  information to the media and the transfers were  meant to keep them away from Harare where journalists are dominant,” said some of them.

Prisons spokespersons Pricilla Mtembo confirmed that there were massive transfers going on in the organisation.

“There are transfers going  on  throughout the entire prison  service including Chikurubi  Prison but  what I can not  confirm  is what  has motivated  them. I need to confirm with the relevant authorities first before I talk to the media,” she said in a telephone interview.

In May seven inmates led  by Albert Matapo with the assistance of  a prison  officer  who  has  since  been convicted managed to break  a cell at  Chikurubi maximum  prison  but  failed to escape because of drunkenness.

The inmates were given alcohol by the prison officer that they downed before they attempted to escape.

This  prompted  the  prisons officials  to  institute an investigation which  has led to the removal  of  at  least 70 officers from the
prison.

Officers  at Chikurubi prison say  the officer-in-charge senior Assistant  Commissioner Kombai  has  been  left untouched  because he
is a war veteran who  also participated in the  anti-MDC-T supporters campaign in the  controversial June 28 2008 Presidential  run off elections.(ZimEye, Zimeye)

It good news when police victimise each other taste of own medicine. Those transfered must go to those remote places and get corroded with time. When police are in Harare they think they are in heaven. It good when you victimise each other. No one is going to be a President without being voted by the people of Zimbabwe. We love seeing the police fighting among themselves and those leacking information to media please carry on with your good work. The information helps the lost to understand the evil in our country That is consuming everyone. Keep fighting among yourselves we enjoy that.

See you all in Binga, Gwanda, Plum Tree and many of the most remote and isolated towns in Zimbabwe this will open your eyes and learn what it means to be a policeman of police woman.

It is not victimisation for a member of the disciplined forces to be sent to serve in a remote part of the country. This culture of wanting to serve only in Harare is pathetic and reflects an erosion of values in the prison service. These guys no longer know their job description. There is a mountain to climb in bringing back normalcy and commitment to the charters of these organisations. These kind of jobs are not a walk in the park for you to get rich and fat whilst time passing. If you are not dedicated and do not have a calling for it get out.

Ekita, why trying to display your ignorance to the public. My friend, for your information, there is a very big difference between Zimbabwe Prison Service and Zimbabwe Republic Police. The former is under Ministry of justice, its mandate is to look after convicts and suspects in remand prison. The later falls under Ministry of Home Affairs and its main duty is to protect citizens and their properties, mantain law and order among others. Only a misguided fool like yourself will ever confuse the two. Being uniformed officers, they do not have the right to complain about the transfers as this is exactly what is in line with their operations.

This is a big sign that political pressure is mounting within the public service. Prisons have been the used as the final destination for all those who call for democracy (eg Mandela, Mugabe, J Mukoko etc). They would have worked better if they were built for offenders only (eg Chinoz, Makuvise for stealing MDC funds). Once they are infiltrated with the opposition or other faction group, it becomes a security problem to the ‘man’ himself. I hope it wont spread to all prisons, for there will be no need for transfers, ‘what will be done to them?’ will be a million doller question.

Matapo as President! What appalls me is that there are Majors in The ZRA with such a low level of intelligence…but then all the wise men have left the sinking ship so we shouldn’t be too surprised.
