Harare (ZimEye) – MDC Mutare East MP Shuah Mudiwa, who was convicted for kidnapping a 12-year-old girl last week, has been jailed for seven years.

Mutare chief magistrate, Hlekani Mwayera gave Mudiwa a seven-year jail term but two and a half years were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in five years.

The Mutare East MP and other MDC activists were arrested in November 2007 on kidnapping allegations.

“The removal of such offenders from the society is called for. I therefore sentence you to seven years in prison,” said Hlekani.

The MDC currently has at least six MPs who are facing various serious ‘crime charges’ in the courts, including Kwekwe Central MP Blessing Chebundo who is facing rape charges.

However, the MDC has dismissed the charges as ‘trumped-up by President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party’. Speaking to the ZimEye on Sunday, the MDC’s Information & Publicity Officer in the United Kingdom, Matthew Nyashanu (above) said that the charges are nothing but false, and an attempt to divert attention from the Chiadzwa diamond-field mass graves Mudiwa was about to reveal to the world.
