A freight “businessman” who devastated cabinet Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi’s family, Fungwa Mawarire has continued to swindle customers despite having been exposed, named and shamed earlier this year.
A number of customers have submitted evidence revealing that Mr. Mawarire who also owes several thousands of dollars to Zimbabwean music giant Oliver Mtukudzi, has failed to deliver their valued goods. As a result, they have incurred prejudice stretching into thousands of dollars for unexpected extra expenses.
Mawarire is of no fixed abode, advertises fictitious phone numbers, and yet many customers have continued to approach him for his ‘services’ only to later find themselves in frustration and deeper financial losses.
One male customer who requested anonymity has told ZimEye he ended up paying up to USD5000 extra charges for customs and storage expenses for his van, wrote to Mawarire in June for his van :
May I remind you that the date of delivery to Harare was initially 22/06/2012; the date today is 26/09/2012. 3 months down the line and I’m still awaiting delivery; what do you think I want to hear? Playing to the gallery? Mr Mawarire, fact is fact and you know your facts.
Where is the van because it is NOT in Harare and certainly not in my possession despite the fact that I do not owe you a penny. I have settled my bill with you and your company in full.
I want my van delivered by midday today and an explanation from yourself as to how you will recompense for the breach of contract and damage you have caused under the pretence of providing a service. You think things will just go away if you ignore them? I’m sure the authorities in Zimbabwe, Mozambique and the UK take a different view.”
Going Into hiding
Several voice messages were left on Mawarire’s answering machine, with none being attended to to this day.
Mawarire has in the past told a customer that he actually goes into hiding whenever he has financial doldrums.
“When I have problems – I cut-off everyone, my mother included,” he told a Mumbengegwi family relative who had ended up trying to reach him through his mother.
Change company name.
ZimEye can also reveal that Mawarire has assumed a new company name, after the previous entity became dissolved. Before, his company was called Zimtownship Global Services Ltd, but it is now known as Zimtownship Global Services Limited.
With the above client, Mawarire has claimed that unexpected costs caused the failure.
The Van was cleared in Bond as advised and it is intact as well as the contents. Everything is still in your name as expected, totally & legally above board. You will be aware of the unbudgeted costs we have incurred in this transaction – that has impacted on our ability to fully wash our hands and hand it to you but we are desperately working on it.”
But this is not the first time Mawarire has had problems and with Mumbengegwi family, he actually revealed he had gone into hiding after what he referred as ‘problems’ caught up with him.
It is disheartening to note that some of our folks in the Diaspora want to take advantage of others through short-changing them in various ways. Some are trusted with goods as they head home and once they hit home, they give the goods or the money to their loved ones. Upon return from home they either go into hiding or move from where they used to live or emerge with different stories that can actually make some of the exploited folks pump out more in sympathy. Some are simply cheating folks through not delivering goods. Some simply over-inflate prices or just try to reap where they did not sow. Fraud is emerging in various ways including some at the Zimbabwe Postal Services who actually open incoming parcels from abroad especially at this time of the year as folks send in parcels for Christmas. There is need for a shale up from such corrupt deeds. Those who take advantage of, or defraud others must be exposed, named and shamed. But in so doing, we as ZimEye, will make effort to get all the facts in place and we publish these complaints to prevent fraud and corruption in the community. So many of us work hard and expect to enjoy the fruits of our labour. We cannot stand by and see these alleged fraudsters ripping folks of their dues and treasures as if they are pirates. Zimbabwe, if you have bee defrauded, ZimEye can help you expose such alleged fraud.
