ZIMBABWE Girl Child Network founder Betty Makoni has been handed a Federation Of Peace Award which was first handed to former Prime Minister Abel Muzorewa, the first Zimbabwean to receive such in the United Kingdom.
The award effectively raises Makoni to the status of an international Ambassador of Peace awarded by the Universal Peace Federation organisation’s women division.
There are on database records only (2) two other Zimbabweans listed apart from Makoni given this award, and the first of them was former Prime Minister of Rhodesia-Zimbabwe Abel Muzorewa; the second is an activist by the name Diana Murungu.
Makoni was handed the award three weeks ago at a Christmas function in London.
The Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP) – UK’s President, Mitty Torma explained to ZimEye on Tuesday why Makoni was given the award saying it was in recognition for her outstanding efforts to represent and coordinate crucial women’s issues internationally:
It was “because she came to speak at the UK parliament about her work and about how she has been working to raise and highlight the issues happening in Zimbabwe to do with the girl child and HIV in her country and we were very impressed that she has saved so many young girls.
“We wanted to recognise her for that and to celebrate her achievements,” she said.
Meanwhile, Makoni has been in the United States where she has a long schedule of visits with high profile persons. This week she was at former US president Bill Clinton’s School Of Public Service in Little Rock where she was guest of honour.
Bill Clinton’s School Of Public Service is a division of the University of Arkansas.
Says Makoni of her encounters there:
“I was taken round the Presidential Clinton Center here in Little Rock. It takes peace, unity, knowledge, wisdom and everything positive for a people to build schools, universities and libraries and keep them neat , accurate and make them learning centres. I felt challenged as an African woman and my hope is that we copy some things that are good…what is good about the west is they put education first. There is a culture of learning and researching and discovering new things …..that is good to copy. Once you destroy education you destroy a people and once you lie about knowledge you can destroy everything and everyone,” she said.
