BEITBRIDGE – The MDC-T’s party secretary for Beitbridge West district in Matabeleland South, has been arrested on charges of allegedly insulting President Robert Mugabe when he requested explanation on the origin source of maize implements.
Mr. Pedson Mbedzi was on Wednesday taken away by unknown police officers after he had questioned the origin of various food distribution items and requested to know why it is that only villagers from ZANU PF party were the only residents receiving financial aid.
“Mbedzi was arrested yesterday( Wednesday), after he quizzed one village head why Zanu PF supporters in the area were the only ones receiving free maize seeds inscribed with Mugabe’s picture. He also asked whether the maize was from government or it was from Mugabe’s home. He is now facing charges of insulting Mugabe and is currently detained at Zezani Police Station, but we have since dispatched our team of lawyers to deal with the matter. We expect him to appear in court on Friday,” said Norman Mpofu MDC-T Matabeleland South Provincial Secretary for Social Welfare.
ZANU(PF) recently launched the “Presidential Well-wishers Special Agricultural Inputs Scheme”.
The scheme has received widespread criticism with the analysts and the MDC-T party accusing ZANU PF of tampering with diamond funds to pay for their election campaigns. Writes columnist Herbert Mugwagwa:
“It’s only presidential in two special ways, namely, its ZANU(PF) Presidential and not Zimbabwe Presidential and, secondly and more appropriately, it’s a bid to win the Presidency and other elections in the 2013 plebiscite. I am not so sure about the Well-wishers part. Perhaps it’s because it has been financed by ZANU(PF) well-wishers. The most inappropriate word is ’Special’ because there is nothing special about a 25 dollar 10kg bag of maize seed and 50 kg bag of fertilizer per household for the 800 000 households in need.”
