Hundreds of alleged MDC-T youths supporters are facing difficulties in registering to vote in Harare South constituency due to reported politicisation of the registration process by Zanu PF supporters.
The three week process which ends on Sunday has seen ZEC being widely criticized for concentrating the registration sites in rural areas, which are seen as traditional Zanu-PF strongholds.
In a visit to St John’s Retreat Primary School in Harare South, scores of frustrated youths could be seen roaming around the school.
Tatenda Chigwada, who is an aspiring Councillor for MDC-T, reported that Zanu PF youths dressed in party regalia and war veterans were roaming around the registration centre distributing a ‘Zanu PF newsletter’, the Insider.
“The process has been turned into a political rally and registration officials are working with war veterans and this has resulted in the politicisation of the whole process,” said Chigwada.
He added that Zanu PF had employed all its machinery and techniques to scuttle and frustrate youths from registering to vote.
“Zanu PF does not have the youths at heart all they do is to use and dump the youths,” said Chigwada adding that they demand a democratic and transparent voter registration open to all eligible citizens regardless of political affiliation.
Nyanzira, who hails from South Park and also one of the MDC-T youths who managed to register to vote at St John’s Retreat Primary School, said the process was hectic and required a lot of patience and conviction.
“It has been a long, hectic process and boring process, I managed to register because I faked my identity and pretend to be a pro Zanu PF youth,” he said.
A Zanu PF youth, who spoke on conditions of anonymity for fear of victimisation, confirmed that the registration process was politicised and only those identified by Zanu PF leaders were the only ones registering to vote at the school.
A Staunch Zanu PF supporter, who was only identified as Chigodo, openly vowed that he will personally deal with those young people who will threaten Harare South Constituency, the only Zanu PF stronghold in Harare metropolitan.
“Musha nemusha une vakuru vawo and this is a Zanu PF home no one will take it away, we will only serve those we know,” declared Chigodo
Jacob Mafume, an aspiring Member of Parliament for Harare South, described the process as fraudulent and partisan.
“This whole process is meant to cater for the needs of only one political party and the ship is being steered by people who are determined to hinder potential MDC supporters from voting”, said Mafume.
He added that democracy was never going to be achieved by the mockery manner in which the voter registration process was being carried.
