Mutare(ZimEye)Hundreds of armed soldiers have been found patrolling in the ward 26 of Makoni South area.
ZimEye has been told that up to 400 army officers are currently stationed in the village surroundings of Makoni South.
Villagers in Magondo and Mupanguri have since expressed shock and fear according to our sources just as legislators confessed ignorance.
According to conventions, unless an area is a designated military training area, the army is obliged to consult or at the least inform local leaders before entering the populated area.

The implications of military presence can be widespread affecting business confidence, and general well being of citizens.
Reasons for and a comment on the reported deployment were not known at the time of writing, and telephone calls to the Ministry of Defence were not being answered.
Zimbabwean soldiers have in recent years been associated with terror. (ZIMBABWE, ZimEye)

  1. Armed for what? What are they going to fight against there? That is peasant territory where villagers peacefully go about tilling their maize and nzungu fields, tend to their token possessions of a few cattle and goats and enjoy a scud at the local chigutiro growth point, so why send heavily armed soldiers to such a place, it defies any logic!
Unless there is conflict or security threat against the nation, soldiers should be confined to their barracks!!

  2. Assam Musa you have summed it all. A soldier should always be armed and whats so special about that? Did they fire any shots to civilians? Are they attending or addressing any rallies? I come from a village in Domboshawa which is close to Elphida Barracks, a millitary camp which now houses the Presidential Guard Regiment and during my childhood, the camp was occupied by the One Mechanized Battallion and then Artillery Officers. My experience with these uniformed men is that they are human beings who also misses civil life. They have and are always part of our community. Yet mdc and Zanu Pf freely conducts their campaigns in the area without hinderances.

  9. Violence was organised from the 3.2 Infantry battalion, which was at the helm of the structure of violence. The 3.2 battalion financed the programmes through Major General George Kafesu (ZNA). Kafesu instructs the ZANU-PF coordinator Nathaniel Mhiripiri (war veteran) to form militia bases. The coordinator then liaised with the traditional leader Chief Broadwork Gandanzara to drum up support for ZANU-PF. The chief used his influence and threats of violence to mobilise communities under his chieftainship to attend ZANU-PF meetings (Gwidza and Jakata bases). The coordinator also liased with Zimbabwe Republic Police to block possible arrests of perpetrators of violence.
There are 5 dormant bases and 2 active bases in Makoni South constituency.
