The horrific incident in which a woman was run over and killed by a kombi driver at Harare’s Copacabana terminus on Wednesday occured merely because the named police officer had moved to smash the driver’s windscreen, witnesses have said.
The accident which was clearly avoidable saw masses in the Copacabana area flooding the terminus area to attack and punish the cop who was only saved by a passing soldier, witnesses have told ZimEye.  More on this story- Harare Woman Killed By a Speeding Kombi at Terminus

Mupurisa akatozonunurwa nemusoja akapfuura nepo . Handina kukwanisa kutora mufananidzo sezvo zvinhu zvakandityisawo. (The cop was only saved by a passing soldier. I failed to take any photos as the whole fracas was so scary.)’
Police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza has confirmed the accident but said the commuter omnibus hit the woman and then fled from the scene before he was apprehended.

  1. For once let us allow people to contribute here, and air their views, without anyone rushing to conclude that they are MDC or ZANU affliated. Let us grow up in thinking and try to progress here.
The fact still remains the same that the Police initiated this fracus that culminated into a tragedy. An innocent woman was untimely and senselessly killed, and this could have been avoided if we had a professionally trained police force on the ground, with good record of conduct and discipline exuded from themselves first.
It is of no use trying to strain our little minds and limited knowledge into coming out with possible theories and scenarios in a miserable attempt to defend an incompetent action taken by ZRP that resulted in the death of an innocent citizen..
WE were not there at the scene when it happenned, it is better and smarter to hold our horses first. We have an eye witnesses here, or several eye witnesses who saw what happenned, and the record of ZRP service delivery is known to lack in many venues including that of bringing peace and maintenance of urban order.
There is no need to twist this incident into Zanu/MDC vendetta. For once people with nothing to say about this incident kindly keep quiet. There is a family out there who has lost a daughter, a mother, a wife etc. Let us be sensitive and stop spewing our Zanu/MDC vendetta especilally inapplicable in this situation.
ZRP should not be regarded as a party-affiliated force, but it is a National force that serves and protects the public in the country. If they are wrong, they are wrong, and it should be said, and their action condemned in the strongest language.

  2. Our judgement towards such serious allegations against the police is purely compromised against political affiliations. A sober analysis of this report can give us answers to this one sided story. It is clear that each time a mishap occurs, MDC T quickly tries to politicise that mishap by playing victim and in this case, by trying to portray our police force as useless, corrupt and a very cruel force. Assuming the police officer wanted to smash the screen as alleged, what does a law abiding citizen in this case the driver do? Is it lawful to run away from the police, and worse more running over and killing people in the process? Is it true that police are smashing windscreens as alleged? If so, did anyone bother to report this? Why would the mob and everyone else not do justice to the officer when he was about to smash the screen? What is the driver saying because this is an eyewitness’ story ? Nyepai mushe, don’t think we all follow blindly like you do

  3. these are symptoms of gaps created by have a double carriageway government. if you trace authority of a police officer you see gaps in professionalism, gaps in accountability.
dont blame anyone because we asked for this ramshackle structure.
If they are failing to be impactful now what miracle will happen for them to bring change. much challenging for bread and butter issues.
While we perish on the roads they will be at it creating another scandal. Our problem in Zimbabwe has always been putting hope in incompetent opportunists who find their way to the top echelons of power.
This postering, opportunism, nepotism and buddy politics is an epidemic weakening Zimbabwe. Real change unfortunately seems all rhetoric. History repeats itself

  4. The police have to establish Rule of Law first. ZRP cannot protect and serve the public effciently and effectively if they discharge their official duties under the influence of a spirit of vengeance against perpetrators who were responsible for their fallen colleagues dying in the line of duty.
This is not fair to the people and this is not acceptable at all. They cannot go about smashing windows of commuter transport operators just because of a prior incidence that occurred in the past. The ZRP have become part of the problem, if not the main problem themselves, in urban lawlessness and vandalism.
My deepest sysmpathy goes to the family and loved ones of the woman victim.

  5. Ironically thats what you get when you have a democractic transport service where drivers are only motivated by money and not service.
On the other hand i feel sorry for police who evidently show they are poorly equipped to deal with these minibus drivers with law in their hands.
In this age of technology, a small tablet pc would be enough to get minibus number plate and relay this to vehicle reg database.
Enforcing law through owner of the minibus is much better than confronting minibus drivers.
On urgent issues like overloading or poor tyres where traffic police must take immediate action, the authority of police must never be compromised. We will always have problems with citizens who feel democracy means undermining law enforcement
When did people start man handling police, it is these little things that make me feel it will get worse if the man of chinja is given the mandate to lead our country. If his advisers never cared about our lot when they stayed in their farm enclaves surely they will watch again while we are knocked down by kombis, as long as one of us turns up for work at their factory.

  6. Only Greyhoria narrated this rubbish. How do you know the police was going 4 the screen?
These animals (combi drivers) run over police officers that z why they crash their wind screens.
When u are harrased in these combiz u cry
2 the police yet when they try and help u u blame them.
Muchama.ma bhadharai ma dollar pa trip vana vengochani.

  7. I remember a time when a car running away from police would be put on APB and the driver would always be apprehended . These days you wonder kuti what sort of policing is that. Its like saying police can open fire if they find you smoking a joint. Normally you arrest the person and not kill him. Mupolice charter hamuna zvese zvekupwanya mawindscreens and saka on whose instructions are they carrying out these.hupenyu hwemunhu hunokosha and if you miss that kutonga kwacho munenge makoniwa.

  8. Greyhole, I think mdc-t home affairs miníster is useless like you. She’s just abusing our hard earned tax moola. She must do us a favour n resign k Grey!
