Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe had the right and power to reject the Knighthood he was given by the British government in 1994 if he wished, it has emerged.
“If you accept a Knighthood, it appears as if the British government has bought you,” said a commentator on the BBC news channel Thursday night.
A number of British nationals have in the past 50 years rejected the government’s honours and these include Beatles singer, John Lennon who returned his Knighthood back to the Queen(pictured) in protest over Britain’s support for the United States military engagement in Vietnam.
More than 116 people have in the past 3 years alone rejected Britain’s highest honours.
This week the Telegraph paper disclosed the official list of everyone who has rejected honours since 1949. (Click here for the list)

Queen Elizabeth...Mugabe could have rejected British Knighthood

The subject of Mugabe’s kighthood continues to dominate conversations in British society as the latter is blasted for his treatment of his own citizens who include those from the Matebeleland region who had thousands massacred a few years after independence (1982-87), which happened as well a few years before he was granted the special honours. His knighthood was later withdrawn from him in 2008.

  1. @ “Mavambo Kusile Dawn” come on now let’s not be disingenuous, we know that “honour” was given to him by the Tories, the same party that wrote the Lancaster constitution and installed Mugabe to be PM in 1980. They knew his fetish of wanting to be English & this was a token to say thank you for protecting colonial capital. Why else do you think they threw him a bone training his officers & selling him arms whilst turning a blind eye on the 1980s genocide perpetrated by the N.Korean trained Zanu thugs? Of all the knighthoods or honours (& they are plentiful) he could have been given it’s interesting that he was awarded “Knight Grand Cross in the Order of Bath” which is largely for senior military officers or senior civil servants. An appropriate token of appreciation for his services to the crown don’t you think?
Mugabe’s remaining “fig leaf irretrievably slipped” a long time ago & it’s rather unfortunate that it’s taken so long for many to realise that the self appointed emperor has no clothes. The activities of the people of Svosve and Hunzvi’s war-vets manoeuvres to force his hand are recorded for all who care to read and understand. This new found rage and playing defender of the people I suspect is not fooling many…it’s a smoke screen sadly once again Zimbabwe and her people are the ones suffering from the criminal cabal masquerading as politicians.

  2. The greedy sod Mugabe loves publicity, money etc. too much to have rejected it. Knighthoods should be reserved for men of honour, not for bloody murdering, theiving, good for nothing tyrants like Mugabe.

  3. @ oj “There is noway he could have rejected the British knighthood coz he is a known admirer and a loyal servant of the crown. Before the fallout he was ever on British soil and his bitterness compares with the behaviour of an estranged wife.”
You are so on point..some are taken in by these new feigned “principles” of his, clearly the geriatric has a long history of “moments of madness” init?
The truth is he couldn’t say no because he is drunk with their education & after spending yrs on that fake ascent he couldn’t wait to prostrate himself before the Queen of England & be accepted as part of the english nobility and defender of the empire in the colonies. Arise Sir Robert! His rant about Britain at every gathering..even hijacking funerals confirms his bitterness akin only to a woman scorned.

  4. To hell with those British knighthoods! Mugabe has numerous secret admirers, and he knows it. What’s wrong with some of them bringing a token of appreciation? Why should he reject a material symbol from some of his admirers? Firstly, it’s rude and, secondly, it’s a refutation of your acknowledged status. How many of us have accepted tokens from ‘secret admirers’ whom we don’t necessarily love?

  14. Of course he could have simply turned it down, it was not in anyway significant. It had no meaning to the people of the Republic of Zimbabwe. One has to understand that his excellence accepted the honour just as a reconciliatory gesture. It could be suggested that the British had anticipated the land reform programme. Just as comments indicates, once you are knited you have been bought or bribed to allow them pursue their interests. Well Zimbabwe could not be recolonised through amaiCHARISI’s bakatwa (sword) touching his excellence’s shoulders. Mugabe have been honoured beyond just knithood, matehwe eshumba, embada, egarwe: swords of honour ie mapfumo, mapanga, zvigwagwa and the whole army that he chiefly commands. It was a real compromise to accept that cheap sword be placed on both his shoulders. The sooner it was withdrawn the better for it had caused him shame, regret, embarassment and sleepless nights. The withdrawl was just an effort to energise media propaganda against our beloved president. Baba is now more comfortable without that hyporitical and false honour.
KEEP YOUR SWORDS AND WE KEEP OUR ZIMBABWE AND HONOURS
