(Harare)The case of missing exam papers being investigated by the ministry of Education and Sport together with the exam board Zimsec took a new twist on Thursday afternoon after a report narrated that a disgruntled prostitute snatched the important batch of papers from the named headmaster after he had allegedly failed to pay up for pleasuring himself on her.
The report published by a UK based paper written by one Zwanai Sithole quoted sources at the Ministry of Education, Sports, Arts and Culture provincial offices in Bulawayo, stating that Zimhuno lost the examination papers at a local lodge where he had booked with a lady of the night.
“What really happened is that after collecting the examinations papers from Zimsec, Zimhuno booked at a local lodge with a prostitute. He left the papers which were sealed in khaki paper at the lodge’s reception and the woman noticed this,” said a source at the provincial education offices.
The source according to the report says the following morning, the unidentified woman demanded her dues from Zimhuno but the headmaster allegedly reneged on his promise. Instead, he gave her half of the amount which they had earlier agreed on.
After that, the source said the woman left the room in a huff, leaving Zimhuno fast asleep. She reportedly went to the lodge’s reception and took the examination papers as compensation for the shortfall.
“When the headmaster woke up and became sober he went to reception and was told that the examination papers had been taken by the woman.
After realizing the gravity of his negligence, he cooked up the version that the papers were lost in a public transport” said another source. The Zimbabwe School Examination Council (Zimsec) has already cancelled the affected papers and will have to reset the examinations at a cost of $850 000.
Zimsec has standard procedure
Meanwhile Zimsec has defended itself for the handling of the matter stating that they continue to upholding a standard procedure.
The exam body’s information and public relations manager Ezekiel Pasipamire told ZimEye:
“Yes, ZIMSEC has a standard procedure for sending out exam question papers. We have question paper collection points in each district where ZIMSEC hands over question papers to the Ministry Officials (headmasters). This procedure is not new and it has been followed for years.”
The body however acknolwedged that they have stopped utilising registered secure postal services:
“No, we don’t use registered post for sending out examination question papers. We used to use action packs from ZIMPOST for the return of written scripts but we have since stopped,” she said.
She also added that it is normal for headmasters to collect the exam papers in person:
“It is very normal for a Headmaster to collect scripts on behalf of the school, after that it is not ZIMSEC’S policy to find or organise transport for the Heads to reach their schools. This is what all headmasters do and looking at all the 2 118 Ordinary Level centres it means 2 117 headmasters
managed to take their question papers to their respective schools as usual,” she said. (ZIMBABWE, ZimEye)
