(LONDON) A female Zimbabwean nurse who let an alcoholic patient die in her hospital bed after saying she did not care if she ‘drank herself to death’ has been kicked out of the profession.
Zvichandiitei Chombo allowed a female patient to leave the ward unattended to down a bottle of vodka in March 2008, an investigation has found.
While she was away colleagues Joy Cameron and shift co-ordinator Anota Quadri made false records claiming they had carried out 15-minute observations, the panel found.
When she saw patient A in an intoxicated state, Ms Chombo reportedly said:
‘She can drink herself to death. I do not care.’
When the female patient died, the coroner ruled that she died as a result of alcohol intoxication and aspiration pneumonia.
“there is a degree of established fact…that Patient A was highly intoxicated and died as a result of aspirating her own vomit and high alcohol levels. The coroner found that Patient A died as a result of alcohol intoxication and aspiration pneumonia. The verdict was accidental death contributed by neglect. The circumstances of the neglect being that having consumed alcohol in a toxic and lethal quantity her need for medical assessment and attention on the evening of 24 March 2008 was not recognised at the time,” the tribunal found.
The investigation hearings were held between September last year stretching into the second week of January 2013.
