The leader of the Matebeleland Liberation Organisation, Paul Siwela has been granted the famous Umhlalo Award in recognition for the work he has been leading, campaigning for a breakaway Matebeleland state.
He was handed an Warrior Award Certificate by the Umhlahlo weSizwe sika Mthwakazi, non- governmental organisation pushing for the independence of The Republic of Matabeleland since 2006.
The MLO leader was handed the award at a ceremony to mark the fierce battle of resistance against British colonial forces by Matebele warriors when they fiercely fought at Mbembesi on 3 November 1893.
Siwela who is campaigning for the independence of The Republic of Matebeleland by 2018, said secession was a common political reality in many countries across the world and so there is no reason why Matebeleland should not be granted its autonomy.
Said Siwela who in recent days has had charges of treason leveled against him because of these efforts:
Our secession agenda has been informed by our own experiences and desire to decolonise our territory from the colonial construct of Rhodesia the latter day Zimbabwe which has caused so much pain, humiliation and dehumanisation to the Ndebele nation through marginalisation and genocide. The Republic of Matebeleland ought to live side by side with the Republic of Zimbabwe in peace and co operate with one another when and where necessary and possible. Matebeleland can not afford to be in the horse and a rider relationship with Zimbabwe in this century thus The Republic of Matebeleland has to be a full independent and sovereign state by 2018 and join the family of nations and contribute to the development thereof. The Scots are breaking away from United Kingdom,while Flemish seek their autonomy from Belgium,and yet 40 states in United America intend to secede from the USA and so are the Catalonians inspired to have their autonomy. Self determination is a human right which is an inalinieable right to be exercised by any nation of this world at any time of their choosing. Any one who resist or denies others to enjoy this right is not fit or should not be entitled to this right to himself.
Recognition to other ethnic groups
Siwela added stating that there shall not be any discrimination in the Republic of Matebeleland.
“The Republic of Matebeleland constitution shall recognise the following ethnic and racial groups Asiatic people,Chewa, Dhombe, Lozi, Khalanga, Khoi San, Ndebele, Nambia, Sotho, Shona, Swati, Tswana, Tonga, Vhenda, Xhosa,White and Zulu and the Republic shall be home to all these groups and be equally before the Republic s constitution and enjoy equal opportunities,rights and duties. There would be zero tolerance to corruption and discrimination but greater freedoms to all the citizens of the Republic,” he said.
