Zimbabwe:Sadc backed ZEC is a Farce, says UK MP
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission which the regional SADC body backed for conducting a peaceful special vote process, has been condemned by a prominent British legislator, James Duddridge, who labelled it as conducting illegal operations and one that is working to prop back President Robert Mugabe after the upcoming July elections.
The ZEC is in “complete defiance of constitutional law,” writes Duddridge.
His comments come after SADC at the weekend issued a statement calling “upon all political parties to co-operate as fully as possible with Zec in order to ensure that it is able to meet these challenges.
“Summit encouraged the government, all political parties and leaders to continue with these commendable efforts which will help realise credible elections.”
But writing on the Conservative party official blog, Duddridge bemoaned Zimbabwe’s preparedness for credible elections:
“Last weekend, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission conducted a special voting process to allow those members of the police forces and security sector who will be deployed elsewhere during the polling to vote. It was claimed by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission that 69,000 police officers have applied for special voting, yet there are only about 40,000 police officers registered in the country. Who are these extra 29,000?
“Despite the recent removal of the names of many deceased individuals on the electoral roll, including that of the former Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith, the list is still estimated to contain the names of at least an extra one million citizens who are now dead. With an extra two million ballot papers reported to have been printed by the ZEC, the expectation is that many of these papers will be stuffed into the ballot boxes using these ghost names.
“The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has behaved in a manner that is unacceptable, illegal and in complete defiance of constitutional law. President Mugabe and his ZANU-PF have once again openly and blatantly distorted Zimbabwean law, ignored binding demands for social and legal reform in the country by the South African Development Community (SADC), thwarted a free and open media, and dashed genuine initiatives to enable a fair-and-free election in Zimbabwe.
“The future of another generation of Zimbabweans looks depressingly bleak unless the international community doe verything in their power to hold President Mugabe and General Chiwenga, the head of the armed forces, accountable for their actions,” he concludes.

Can someone tell me what will happen with an mdc gvt in terms of security if in every election they allow to be rigged under their very noses, will they handle intenational episonage etc. Zec has always been saying come forward with suggestions where yu think how this rigging will occur but so far no one has visited zec’s offices every one is busy campaining. Scratch away the glossy new coat of paint for the elections and you find the same old Zanu PF Coconut Party – African brown on the outside, racist colonial white on the inside !
The shameless Zanu PF knuckleheads still live in their own little one-party state world, where they believe they can do what they have always done during ‘democratic’ elections, rig the voting system and terrorise the electorate with impunity, in order to retain political power.
When it finally dawns on them that Zuma, the SADC and the Zimbabwean people will stand up to them if they use their tried and tested tactics of rigging, violence and intimidation in the run up to the election to prevent the will of the people determining the election outcome and sealing the Zanu thugs fate, this is likely to end in one of two ways.
If Mugabe and his uneducated Zanu PF thugs are smart(and there is zero evidence to support that view, and plenty to confirm the opposite), they will accept the result and take the total humiliation meted out to them by their political masters – the Zimbabwean electorate – like ladies and gentlemen.
Unfortunately, what is much more likely is that the corrupt to the bone marrow, sadistic thugs within the senior ranks of the military will attempt a coup. That is one of the reasons for the build up of military hardware, it is a fallback position should Zanu PF be prevented from stealing the elections again.
Such a move by the Army would be political suicide for Zanu PF, as it would mean the intervention of outside forces to reinstate a democratically elected government.
The ball is clearly in their court, renouncing violence and accepting the will of the people will be tough for them to swallow, after acting with impunity against those very same people for decades.
However, unfortunately, for most within the ill-educated senior ranks of Zanu PF and the military, supreme arrogance and belligerent pig headedness is a badge they wear with pride – continuing to act in such a way over the next few months is guaranteed to seal their fate, and see the Zimbabwean people kick them into the dustbin of history, where they belong.
The fact that an outsider said it doesn’t make it a lie! Even Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania had similar sentiments…
