Harare – A woman who was shot and killed by her ex-husband in the presence of police officers will be honoured at 12PM today.
Hararians are converging to Warren Hill Cemetery to conduct a ceremony celebrating 16 days of Women Activism and also in honour of the Charity Sabawu nee Mukarati who was brutally murdered by her husband in September 2008.
Charity was a loving mother, a hard working and enterprising woman, who was at the prime of her life, writes Harare West MP Jessie Majome.

Below was HON MP Majome’s  full letter announcing the function:

Dear Harare Westerners and Friends
I am inviting you to the Harare West 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence Commemoration, remembering Shamiso Charity Sabawu nee Mukarati.
Date: Monday 9 December 2013
Venue: Warren Hill Cemetery, Grave 501, Section D
Time: 12pm
On 1 September 2008 Shamiso Charity Sabawu, a Harare Westerner was shot and killed in cold blood by her ex-husband at the former Globe Trotter Hotel, in Good Hope, Ward 41. Her killer was convicted of murder with actual intent and sentenced to 16 years imprisonment but will serve 12 yrs due to automatic and usual remission of a fraction of the sentence. She was survived by 8 children with youngest at the time of her death only 6 years old.
Charity Sabawu nee Mukarati was a loving mother, a hard working and enterprising woman, who was at the prime of her life.
She died because the system failed her. The ex husband defied many peace orders which were reported to the Marlborough Police but nothing was done. On that fateful day in September she was shot in the presence of police officers who accompanied her killer and helped him get access to her, and who, including one armed with a rifle, fled like lightning, for dear life, from the scene leaving her to die.
As MP I am disturbed by the heinous acts of Gender Based Violence that happen in Harare West constituency. There is the September Meyrick Park tragedy where a man was burnt to death by this wife who then committed suicide. Then 2 years ago in Mabelreign, an officer of the Attorney General’s office, shoved a mugoti (cooking stick), then curry powder into his wife’s vagina, then burned her thighs with a hot iron. Then there is the toddler girl who went missing while her parents were asleep at night, only to be found wandering a few houses away in Emerald Hill, with signs of sexual abuse. All these happened in Harare West!
There will be the laying of flowers at Charity Sabawu nee Mukarati’s grave grave.
Her son Vhusa Dzimwasha , a talented actor will launch his trust Zimbabwe Artists for Hope Trust, which aims to fight gender based violence through the arts.
If you are a perpetrator of Gender Based Violence, STOP IT! If you, or someone you know is experiencing it, REPORT IT!
Let’s have Zero Tolerance to GBV. Never again should a life be lost.
Your MP
Fungayi Jessie Majome

  1. Ladies sometimes the love for the finer things get you into shit. What sabau did is wrong no question about it but ask yo selves wat had she done that we r not being told.

  2. The Police officers have no case to answer because the killer is behind bars. The officers should be commented for saving the husband life as they did not opened fire on him when he shot his late wife.

  3. You must not be surprized at how police officers accompanied someone to commit murder. The same police officers actually arrested a lot of MDC supporters for being abused by ZANU PF supporters. The same police accompanied the so called War vets to abuse MDC supporters. It’s NOT uncommon for our uniformed forces to abuse civilians. In the early 80s, soldiers called the fifth brigade killed more than 20000 civilians. They also maimed, raped and abused more than 100 000 civilians. This is really not new to us. the question is what is going to be done to stop this?

  4. Whilst it is great to honour this woman…..there are a lot of women who have died through gender violence.Let us honour them all and educate both women and men to stop abuse.

  5. whatever the case these 2 idiot officers are bloody cowards, they hev 2 b relieved of their duties asap

  8. It is well known that dicksun sabua was a serial child rapist. He used to boast he was untouchable as a cowardly bogus war vet.Sadly zanupf has made life cheap

  9. No one has the right to terminate someone’s life no matter what Saka zvekuti mukadzi uyu atorwa se angel hazvina basa Kana watadzirwa teedza mutemo

  12. Dickson Kokwani Sabau is an ex Zipra and he fought for this country. I know him personally as a good man. Akangobatwa nemweya wetsvina.

  13. It’s obvious that this story is NOT BALANCED!!…it gives the impression that the late woman was virtually an angel; but as the cliche goes, there are two sides to a story. Maybe, it’s the influence of “wafa wanaka”… It also gives the impression that the cops were not bothered at all; and were as uncaring as s/body watching TV! But how many of us could remain cool, calm & collected when a gun-wielding person is in front of us?!
I don’t condone GBV but let’s try and understand the real issues behind it rather than sweep things under the carpet; so that we can come up with PRACTICAL solutions.

  14. Is this true Jessie?
“On that fateful day in September 2008 she was shot in the presence of police officers who accompanied her killer and helped him get access to her, and who, including one armed with a rifle, fled like lightning, for dear life, from the scene leaving her to die.”
Let it be a lie, else we are doomed!

  15. How on earth do police officers accompany an armed man to go and kill his wife and then flee the scene? The sentence of 16 years (12 yrs effective) is paltry for such a crime. Either the death sentence or life with hard labour would be more fitting!
