(HARARE)Zanu (PF) has suspended a COPAC member under their ticket from any constitutional duties amid allegations that the party representative had been leaking confidential information and documents to the MDC-T, ZimEye can reveal.
Sources within the faction ridden party, ZANU PF, said Edward Chindori Chininga who is also a former Mines Minister had been served with a letter signed by the party’s secretary for administration Dydmus Mutasa announcing his suspension during the late hours of Thursday 6 October after deliberations of a central committee session at the Zanu (PF) headquarters in Harare.
It is believed Chininga’s suspension may be part of Mutasa’s grand plan to punish all persons named on whistleblower website, Wikileaks, after Chininga was quoted allegedly blasting Mines Minister Obert Mpofu as a thief and a crook in conversation with a US envoy.
“Yes it is true but not yet formal that Chindori Chininga has been suspended and the reasons are not yet clear but allegations are that he just like Tracy Mutinhiri is being sympathetic to the MDC led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai,” said the source.
This publication made efforts to seek a comment from several COPAC officials including the Co-Chair person Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana and Jessie Majome the committee spokesperson who all professed ignorance of the development advising this report instead to seek the comment from Chininga himself.
“Well I’m not aware of this suspension but you could get a better comment if you were to call him (Chininga) because as I speak I’m out of the country,” said Mangwana the COPAC co-chairperson representing Zanu (PF) in the constitution making process.
However the other co-chairperson Douglas Mwonzora confirmed the reports of Chininga’s suspension but highlighted that the move had not yet been made public neither had it been communicated formally to COPAC.
“I have for the whole of today been getting this information from some sources within Zanu (PF) that he has been suspended but that has not yet been formally communicated to COPAC.
“But what I want to say is that we don’t get our information via Chindori Chininga but rather we at MDC have a very effective intelligence unit which is even better that the CIO and that is where we got the document in question from,” said Mwonzora.
Mwonzora said Zanu (PF) had crafted a document it wanted to smuggle to COPAC as the basis of the constitution which was intercepted by the MDC intelligence.
“In fact this document in question was created by some individuals within Zanu (PF) who then wanted to smuggle it through some elements within COPAC as the draft constitution,” he added.
Zanu (PF) has made several efforts to abandon the people’s views in the constitution making process by trying to adopt the Kariba draft constitution as the basis for the creation of a new constitution. The new constitution is one of the pre-conditions set by the SADC before the holding of any fresh elections.
Mugabe’s party recently suspended another member Tracy Mutinhiri before expelling her from the party on the same allegation that she had become more sympathetic to the MDC formation led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.
