Zimbabwe’s national and ZANU PF controlled broadcaster (ZBC) has officially admitted the existence of more than four hundred (400) ghost workers who have been on the company’s payroll for more than five years and has directed all the managers to compile a list of subordinates under their departments.
The company’s acting Chief Executive Allan Chiweshe confirmed the development Wednesday.
“With immediate effect we have directed all the managers to compile the names of workers under their department. After compiling the list which will be used to pay workers the manager shall append his signature on the list of the postings to enable accountability”, Chiweshe told ZBC TV news Wednesday.
This week it was reported that some preliminary audit results had revealed that there were at least 400 ghost workers who were being used by the ZBC management to fleece the loss-making parastatal of millions of dollars in salaries.

Among the ghost workers it was reported that were two wives of senior bosses at ZBC who reportedly appear on the salary schedules as station managers for the Mbare and Pockets Hill studios.
The preliminary audit report also said a number of dead ZBC employees were among the ghost workers.
One of the deceased employees is Douglas Rinemhota who was the company’s political correspondent who died in 2007.
Other ghost workers on the company’s pay roll were those who either resigned or were fired years ago.
Chiweshe revealed that the company was working on the workers’ seven months salaries.
“We are calculating their dues and they are going to start getting them in this Thursday,” he said.
Last year the company’s Chief executive Hapison Muchechetere was sent on forced leave by Media, Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Jonathan Moyo after he and his board had failed to present a turnaround strategy for the troubled company. Muchechetere had been given 14 days for that assignment.
The former ZBC boss and his senior management were earning ‘astronomical’ salaries at a time workers were not being paid. “It is quite shocking that for instance the CEO earns $27 000 plus, over and above that earns $3 000 in allowances for housing, $2 500 allowance, $3 000 for home entertainment, unlimited business entertainment allowance. The corporation must pay off his mortgage facility, must built a durawall (security wall), must built an entertainment section at his premises,” Deputy Information Minister, Supa Mandiwanzira said.

  1. Such unbridled greed and rampant looting is unbelievable and shocking!!…no wonder the Bible says “the love of money is the root of all evil”. I sincerely believe that the rot at ZBC is only a tip of the ice-berg; all state enterprises & parastatals and local authorities should be thoroughly audited. It appears that an “engine overhaul” is NOT even good enough: we might have to buy a brand new car after all!!
